[ooc] the world of Mushishi

According to the author, Mushishi takes place in a time frame that doesn't really exist, or if it did, it would be around the 19th century in a Japan where the Meiji restoration didn't happen. Technology appears here and there in the form of musket rifles and magnifying glasses, but there's little else to clue us in more specifically than that.

This page shows the general scenery Ginko is often found walking through on his travels. He sticks to the more rural parts of Japan usually, but he has walked through a busy market in a larger town here and there. Government of any kind doesn't appear in Mushishi aside from the coinage characters use for purchasing goods; in villages, the fit and healthy men who live there take care of any "problems" that need taking care of. Rich families and clans exist (probably mostly of the rich merchant class, if anything), and marry for the sake of strengthening themselves and/or continuing the birthline.

It is worth noting that everyone in the Mushishi world wears Japanese traditional clothing, including kimono, yukata, hakama, hanten, haori and happi coats, but no one in the entire length of the manga makes mention of Ginko's unique western-style shirt and slacks. As a child, however, he did wear normal yukata like other boys.

For the sake of [community profile] planar_crossroads, it will be assumed that characters visiting the Mushishi world will wear either their normal clothes or Japanese-style clothes according to the player's wishes, so long as the issue isn't ICly brought up in a way that would point out that Ginko's clothes don't match his own world's setting. Much appreciated!
